POWAI TEA ESTATE
P.O. Powai, District Tinsukia, Assam 786172
Named after a small rivulet called “Pabhoi”, the British planters anglicized the name to “Powai”. Powai has the largest tea processign factory in india with annual production of 5 mn kgs of black tea. Occupying a vast area of 1266 hectares, 924 hectares is spread over tea. This tea estate in assam was planted in 1890.

This district has an interesting history. This state earlier, was known as “NIJORI T.E.” subsequently an epidemic of kalazar drove the labourers away and the name was changed to Kellyden, to dispel fears. Occupying a total area of 1471 hectares, the Kellyden tea estate of Assam was planted in 1921. The area under tea is spread accross 853 hectares.

This name was bestowed on the land by an ahom king Godadhar Singha. The plot was donated to Sakkhowa Bhuyan who lived off ferns and colacasia plants, then called ‘sakmuthi’, now known as Sagmootea. Occupying a total area of 633 hectares, the Sagmootea tea estate of Assam was planted in 1935. The area under tea is spread accross 444 hectares.

Borhat is an area of historical importance. During the reign of the Ahom Kings "BOR" means 'Big' and "HAT" means 'Bazar', was a big market for salt through barter system. Total area of the estate is 1214 hectares, out of which 527 hectares is under tea. This estate was planted in 1911.

This estate carries the connections of abundant. Known by the local name 'Leteku' which means 'a fruit' and 'Jan' which means 'river', it implies that this fruit grew on the 'river bank'. Total area of the estate is 1163 hectares with 742 hectares dedicated to plantation of tea. This estate was planted in 1922.
